Dr. Melnyk is the first periodontist or dentist of any type in Central New York to be trained and certified in the Pinhole Surgical Technique. This new, innovative and unique treatment allows Dr. Melnyk to correct mild to moderate gum recessions with no incisions, usually no suturing and no harvesting of tissue from the roof of the mouth. No human tissue material is used. All work is done through tiny pinholes, where the gums are carefully lifted from underneath and tiny collagen strips are inserted underneath the gums between the teeth to eliminate or reduce gum recessions. With conventional grafting procedures, such as Subepithelial Connective Tissue Grafts, treatment is often limited to one to three teeth at a time. If multiple areas of gum recession need to be corrected, multiple procedures may be necessary. With Pinhole Surgical Therapy, because all work is done from underneath, and because no tissue is harvested from the palate, multiple teeth can be treated at once, minimizing the need for multiple surgeries. In fact, entire dental arches can be treated in a single sitting. Thin gums can be thickened and long-looking teeth shortened. An additional benefit is that the results are almost immediate, with usually less pain/discomfort, as compared with conventional grafting.
